Kayu Jati atau dalam bahasa Inggris disebut Teak Wood, adalah
satu jenis kayu yang berkualitas, yaitu yang memiliki kekuatan dan keawetan
untuk diolah menjadi produk furniture. Hutan produksi kayu jati yang terbesar
ada di pulau Jawa, sebagian besar dikelola oleh Badan Usaha Milik Negara PERUM
PERHUTANI.
Wilayah terbesar hutan jati produksi ada di Jawa Timur dan Jawa Tengah, yang mana
seluruh hutan jati yang dikelola oleh Perum Perhutani tersebut mencapai luas
11% dari luas Pulau Jawa.
Kualitas Kayu Jati terbaik dihasilkan oleh hutan produksi yang
ada di daerah Blora dan Bojonegoro karena tumbuh di daerah yang tanahnya
memiliki kadar kapur tinggi.
Kayu Jati sudah populer digunakan sebagai bahan baku
pembuatan furniture berkualitas dan berkelas, bukan hanya untuk memenuhi
kebutuhan lokal saja, tetapi juga sudah banyak diekspor ke mancanegara.
Pemanfaatan kayu jati untuk furniture tidak hanya bagian kayu bulatannya saja
atau log, tetapi juga bagian ranting dan akarnya.
Untuk menjaga siklus hutan lestari, Perum Perhutani sebagai
badan usaha yang ditunjuk oleh negara sebagai pengelola dan pemangku hutan
menerapkan sistem tebang berdasarkan Kualitas Umur (KU). Rata-rata masa tebang
sebenarnya untuk setiap siklus kayu adalah 50 Tahun, tetapi sekarang ini siklus
itu diperpendek menjadi 35 tahun. Dalam
setiap masa tebangnya, produksi kayu jati dibagi berdasarkan petak lahan yang
ukurannya telah ditentukan oleh aturan yang dibuat oleh Kementrian Kehutanan.
Setiap masa tebang menghasilkan kayu jati berupa kayu bulat atau log yang
masing-masing dibagi berdasarkan kualitas I – IX, dan harganya ditentukan
berdasarkan kubikasi dari masing-masing kualitas.
Dalam setiap masa tebangnya Perhutani selalu menyisakan apa
yang dinamakan Limbah Tebang. Limbah tebang ini merupakan bagian yang tidak
dimanfaatkan oleh Perhutani untuk dijual sebagai bahan baku kayu. Limbah tebang
sisa pemotongan ini berupa akar atau tunggak, batang pecah, batang berlobang,
dan ranting dengan diameter kecil.
Limbah tebang ini kemudian dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat yang
tinggal di sekitar hutan jati untuk dikumpulkan kemudian dijadikan berbagai
macam kerajinan, mulai dari assesories pelengkap furniture sampai dengan
furniture itu sendiri dengan bahan baku limbah akar jati.
Teak Root Craft, kemudian mulai populer berawal dari
penjualan lokal sampai akhirnya juga menembus pangsa pasar mancanegara.
Macam macam seni kerajinan akar jati yaitu, akar hias, patung,
tempat buah, mangkok, kursi kecil sampai pada pangsa pasar luar negeri seperti
item-item, stool, fruit bowl, teak bowl, dining table, bench, plate mate, teak
root stand dan banyak lagi.

Each logging period produces teakwood in the form of logs or logs, each divided according to the quality of I - IX, and the price is determined on the basis of the cubication of each quality.
At every cut, Perhutani always leaves what is called Waste Cut. Cutting waste is a part that is not utilized by Perhutani to be sold as wood raw material. The remaining cutting waste is in the form of roots or stumps, broken rods, stems perforated, and twigs with small diameter.
